A heat pump only saves you money if it's the right size and it's installed in the right spot. Too small and you run out of hot water halfway through the evening showers. Too big and you've paid more to buy and run a tank nobody fills. We work the size out on site, not by copying whatever was there before, because the old unit may never have been right in the first place.
How we size it
Before we recommend anything, we look at:
- How many people live in the house and how many bathrooms are in use
- Whether everyone showers in the same hour or hot water use is spread through the day
- Where the unit can sit, with enough airflow around it and away from bedroom windows
- Your power supply, and whether the circuit needs any work
- Whether you've got rooftop solar, so we can set the timer to run in the middle of the day
- Water hardness in your area, and whether filtration is worth considering
As a rough guide, a 250 to 270 litre heat pump suits most homes of one to three people, and a 300 to 315 litre unit suits three to five. We'll confirm the right size once we've seen the house.
What's included
Our price covers the unit, the install, new tempering and relief valves, a proper base and drainage, commissioning and testing, and removal of your old system. If your switchboard or circuit needs work, we arrange a licensed electrician and include it in the same quote, so there are no surprises on the day.
A straight swap in the same position usually takes around three hours. Anything involving a relocation or electrical work can take up to a full day, and we'll tell you which when we quote.
Where it should go
Heat pumps pull warmth out of the air, so they need room to breathe. We avoid tight side passages with no airflow, and we keep the unit away from bedroom windows where the hum of the compressor might bother you or the neighbours. Most of the time the old spot works fine and that's usually the cheapest option because the connections are already there.
Questions
How long does a heat pump install take?
A straight swap usually takes about three hours. A relocation, a conversion or a job needing electrical work can take up to a full day.
Are heat pumps noisy?
They make a low hum while the compressor runs, similar to an air conditioner's outdoor unit. We place them away from bedroom windows and you can set most units to run during the day.
Can it go where my old system is?
Usually, yes, and that's generally the cheapest option. If the old spot doesn't have enough airflow or clearance, we'll explain why and suggest a better one.
