Heat pump hot water rebates in WA (2026)

Updated October 2026

There's no WA state government rebate for heat pump hot water systems at the moment. The federal Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme still applies. Eligible heat pumps earn Small-scale Technology Certificates (STCs), and most people assign them to their installer, who takes the value straight off the invoice. In Perth that's typically several hundred dollars, sometimes more.

How the STC discount works

Under the federal Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme, run by the Clean Energy Regulator, eligible air source heat pump water heaters create Small-scale Technology Certificates when they're installed. You can create and sell the certificates yourself, or, like most people, assign the right to a registered agent through your installer. The installer then takes the value off the price you pay, so there's no form to fill in and no waiting for money back.

Who qualifies

  • The heat pump model must be on the Clean Energy Regulator's register of eligible products
  • The tank must be under 425 litres
  • It must be installed by a licensed installer who meets WA requirements
  • The scheme is designed for replacing or displacing conventional electric water heating, so check with your installer if it's a new build

How much is it worth in Perth?

The value depends on the model, its rated performance, where you live and the market price of certificates, which moves over time. As a guide, Perth price guides show a typical heat pump dropping from around $4,400 to around $3,775 once the STC discount is applied, and some larger, higher-rated models get more. We show the exact STC amount on your written quote.

Are there any WA state rebates?

Not for heat pump hot water right now. WA's earlier solar water heater subsidy scheme has closed. Rebates and schemes change, so we check what's current when we quote and tell you if anything new applies.

Watch out for

  • Quotes that list a big 'rebate' without showing the STC amount separately
  • Models that aren't on the register, which don't get the discount
  • Paying full price and being told to claim the rebate yourself later

Questions

Do I have to apply for the rebate myself?

No. Most people assign the certificates to the installer, who takes the value off the invoice. There's no form for you to lodge.

Does every heat pump get the STC discount?

No. Only models on the Clean Energy Regulator's register, under 425 litres, installed by a licensed installer.

Is there a WA government rebate for heat pumps?

Not at the moment. The federal STC discount is the main incentive available in WA.
